South Congress Trailers - Where are they now?

This week, after a 2-day extension, Austin’s own South Congress trailers were given the ol’ boot. I won’t bore you with details, because we’ve all been made aware of the reason that our beloved gastro-satisfiers have departed. Yet another new structure, which I can only assume will be laden with sleek clean lines and hypoallergenic cacti imported from the most exotic corners of the world, will be thrust upon an otherwise modest and quirky strip of Austin. Oh, I’m sorry, did my bitterness show? Before I get all riled up, let’s get back to business.

Where are the trailers to go? Lucky for us, a good amount have already found new homes. Unlike Punky Brewster & Winnie Cooper, SoCo trailers yearn to push past their early success and extend food-wielding ways in the most legen…wait for it…dary of ways, a-la Neil Patrick Harris. Below is what we know of the trailers as of today, May 29, 2013. Although some have found permanent homes, there are others still searching. Take a gander and keep a close eye on the site for new location announcements.

Austin South Congress Food Trailers – Where they moved

Burro Cheese Kitchen – 1221 South Congress Avenue
Coat & Thai - Undecided, but they claim they will announce soon on their Facebook page
Hey Cupcake! - 1511 South Congress
Mighty Cone - 2512 Rio Grande St, Rancho Rio Eatery
Nomad Dosa – 2512 Rio Grande St, Rancho Rio Eatery
Short Bus Subs – Undecided, but you can catch them at their other locations!
Taco Baby – Lamar & Bluebonnet
The Original New Orleans Po-Boy & Gumbo Shop -
Wurst Tex – Undecided, but you can catch them at their second location!

SoCo trailers weren’t the only folks experiencing a lot closure. The fine folks at the Longhorn Food Court near campus also shuttered. Here’s what we know of their whereabouts:

Moses Falafel – Hiatus, and they are looking to open a brick n mortar
Capital City Bakery - 1110 East 12th Street
Conscious Cravings - 5715 Burnet Road

There are also some great new trailer parks that have opened in the past year that you may not yet be privy too. Have you had a chance to check out the newest addition Break Point? There’s also Rancho Rio Eatery and Moontower Saloon.

What do you think of this shake-up?

Food Trailer Excursion in Austin

Last week, a friend told me it was “National Grilled Cheese Month”. Being the patriotic boy that I am, I felt a sudden urgency to observe this sacred if still under publicized holiday. So, I set out on a quest with a very clear mission: to find the best grilled cheese in town. Lucky for us Austinites, Burro Cheese Kitchen makes this quest infinitely easier. Operating under the principles of combining the finest local breads and cheeses, and packed into a stylishly renovated shipping container, Burro really ups the ante on the grilled cheese. With my destination, and sandwich, in mind I hopped on my bike and headed for Burro, currently residing at the South Congress food trailer park. Along the way, I stopped by a few other trailers, new and well established, to check out the scene.

The first place I wanted to check out was the new Yeti Frozen Custard truck off S.1st. Nestled in the same spot as La Barbecue, just south of Elizabeth street, this hip new truck serves up all kinds of delicious custard flavors with an assortment of candy toppings, or in a fizzy float.

They even had a band playing, and free beer over at La Barbecue! Amazing BBQ, free beer, frozen custard, and live music. Who could argue with that!? If I hadn’t already decided on my destination, I surely would have spent just about all day here.

Just a little ways down South 1st, I stopped by our old favorite, Torchy’s where they’re gearing up for summer by providing complimentary umbrellas to shield their patrons from the sun as they wait line. Memories of Baja Shrimp tacos and their delicious queso danced around in my head, drawing me in with their siren’s song, but I was a man on a mission to sail the seas of cheese. Onward I travelled.

On the way, I spotted a few more places that tempted me with their delicious offerings, like Nomad Dosa. Have you ever had a dosa? One of my favorite Indian delicacies, they’re amazing, savory crepe-like wraps. Here, they offer all kinds of different stuffings, that I will definitely be going back to try very soon. They even have vegan friendly and gluten free options, so you can bring ALL your friends here!

I continued onward through the avenue of temptation that is the SOCO food trailer park, enjoying the sights and smells of each unique spot while I still can. Hey, there’s a pita spot! I like pitas! Never have I been so tempted and yet so determined than today. And finally, after only travelling about 2 miles from my home, yet being tempted by at least 4 different spots, I arrived at my destination…

And then all my will power went out the window… I had originally planned on trying the “Waylon and Willie”, a sandwich made with beer bread, redneck cheddar, gruyere, caramelized onions, pepperocinis, and spicy maple bacon sauce. My mouth is watering just typing that. But as soon as I approached the counter, my buddy Scott urged me to try the special: beer bread, with La Barbecue brisket, redneck cheddar, and mango serrano salsa. I said yes before he even finished his sentence. Ladies and gentlemen, the sandwich I just described, the one you see above, has got to be THE best grilled cheese sandwiches I have ever tasted. And I grew up on grilled cheese. I gobbled this this gooey goodness almost as quickly as I decided on it, glad that I could do my part to celebrate what is now my favorite holiday. If you too would like to observe National Grilled Cheese Month in grand fashion, there is no better place to do it than Burro. Happy celebrating!

Booze a La Cart

Emma Janzen
11/12/12

Potato chips and tres leches ice cream? It works. Fried japanese rice balls and French wine? Delightful. Indian crepes and agua frescas? You bet.

All of these seemingly disparate dishes and drinks reflect pairings conducted for the Booze a la Cart series that opened my eyes to some of the exciting possibilities our local food trailer and beverage scenes have to offer.

Booze a la Cart emerged out of a need for more trailer food coverage onaustin360.com. With former food critic Mike Sutter venturing down the freelance path, and current restaurant critic Matthew Odam covering both the restaurant criticism and movies beats, the features department needed someone to step up and help carry some of the weight.

With a healthy knowledge of the local drinks scene through writing for Liquid Austin, I always consider what I am drinking just as much as what I am eating regardless of location, so it seemed natural to integrate beverages into coverage of our food trailer scene.

One of the best discoveries that’s come out of conducting this series is that you don’t have to shell out $100 for a pairing dinner at a fancy restaurant to experience some of the best eats and drinks Austin has to offer. It can be as simple as grabbing a six pack and hitting up a local food trucks with friends (as long as they are located in a BYOB-OK zone; always check with the trailer first to be certain).

At it’s core, the series is about about experimentation and discovery. It’s about diving deep into the roots of the local food and beverage scene and digging up undiscovered culinary offerings with experts from both food and beverage industries in tow to lend an educated palate and opinion. It’s been about becoming more familiar with how food pairs with alcoholic beverages, and getting to know some of the personalities behind the production.

Going forward, I would like to get more coverage of the people behind the food trailers, hear more from Austin’s culinary experts about what trailers they enjoy, and would love to hear from readers about what treasures they have found, or what pairings they have enjoyed.

My personal favorites? I will certainly be revisiting the fresh banh mi sandwiches at Bahn Bahn with a light wine in tow, the delicate wraps at Flip Happy Crepes with a yeasty farmhouse ale, and lavishly decorated meat tubes at Honky Tonk Hot Dogs with an ice cold brew. There’s also an upcoming episode where I feel like I might have found the best Pad Thai that I have had to date in Austin, which surprisingly pairs excellently with Belgian-style bottle-conditioned brews.

At the rate that Austin’s food trailer scene is blossoming, I have no doubt that it will be a long time before I struggle to find a place worth featuring.

You can find Booze a la Cart published every other Monday on austin360.com at www.austin360.com/s/food-drink/trailers, and www.austin360.com/liquid. Have an idea for a great pairing? Contact Emma Janzen atejanzen@statesman.com.
